Advisory Board

Our Advisory Board

The Advisory Board is composed of 15 members and Board Members are retired senior government officials, social researchers, educators and other outstanding leaders from different ethnic and religious backgrounds.  The Director of Shalom Foundation is also a Member of the Board.  Although Board meetings are usually held on an annual basis, emergency board meetings were also held when necessary. In Advisory Board Meetings, all Board Members review and evaluate implementation, achievements, and challenges of all projects and programs of the organization and give necessary guidelines and set policies together with the SMC Members. More importantly, as an external group composed of different distinguished leaders, they also provide unbiased insights and ideas (from a third-party perspective) to the Director and Senior Management Committee.

Since its inception in 2000, Nyein (Shalom) Foundation usually holds regular Annual Advisory Board Meetings with its founding members. However, the 2016 Advisory Board Meeting was the most significant meeting to date for Nyein. Prior to 2016, all of the Advisory Board members consisted only of the founding Director and Board Members (who are the leaders belonging to different religious and ethnic backgrounds, and therefore are highly influential in their communities). At the 2016 Advisory Board Meeting, new Board members were elected, and so it was absolutely important to show our sincere appreciation to the founding Board Members for their participation and valued contribution for the success of our organization. The founding advisory Board Members will be recognized as distinguished honorary patrons of the organization, and all of them were clearly appreciative to be honored in such a way. The organization assured it will continue to welcome their suggestions and advice on its program and project activities in their respective states. They will be continually requested to join any workshops, seminars and meetings in their states to contribute to the success of the organization. In turn, they assured us of their continued commitment to Nyein.

We believe that an advisory board is a collection of individuals who complement each other, and bring unique knowledge and skills, which are in turn reflected in the Board itself. Forming a new advisory board was really opening a new chapter for our organization. The main reason for reforming the Advisory Board was to gradually change the organizational structure and management to fit the changing socio-political situation of the country, such as the recognition by the government of CSOs important role in the country's democratization process, and their different types of contributions for the development of the country.
