Motivated by the aspiration to pursue initiatives toward the attainment of peace and development for the people of Myanmar, including by engaging in mediation to end the armed conflicts that erupted in the post-independence era in ethnic regions of the country, Nyein (Shalom) Foundation was founded in May 2000 by Rev. Dr. Saboi Jum and a group of principled leaders from different religious and ethnic backgrounds. Since inception, Nyein has grown from a small locally-based organization in Kachin State to a well-established local NGO that operates on a national level with international funding. The foundation has been in the forefront of peace-building processes aimed at transforming the conflict that has deeply divided the country for more than half a century. We have created spaces for constructive dialogue between the government and the ethnic groups, and peace education programs have focused on ethnic leaders and grassroots communities.
